News & ActivitiesPresident George W. Bush recently called on Americans to give 4,000 hours of public service over their lifetimes. He asked that we volunteer service to communities as one way of strengthening the nation. President Bush said, "I think we ought to say that if you're interested in fighting evil, love a neighbor. If you're interested in doing something for your country, help somebody in need. Write a check, give your time, volunteer. Government can hand out money, but can't put love in people's hearts." That is what Kiwanis is about and why we would like to have you join us at one of our regular meetings, on Tuesdays at noon, in the First Presbyterian Church Hall at Oak and 23rd street. For more information, please fill out the form on this web site or e-mail the webmaster and we will send more information to you. P. N. Burkard Foundation When our long time Secretary "Butch" passed away, many members of the club decided that we needed to honor him in a special way. Butch was Secretary of our club in excess of 20 years and was responsible for our club being recognized as Distinguished most of the years. He was dedicated to Kiwanis and especially to our club: he could always be seen at every event or project. The idea of forming a Foundation for our club was bantered about for many years but nothing was ever done about it. This was the impetus that was needed; we could honor Butch by naming the Foundation after him. The Past Presidents got together to help promote the Foundation and our resident figures man Past President Ken Brooks took the bull by the horn and got to work on it. Past Governor, Skip contacted Kiwanis International to answer questions and clear the way for the Foundation. After receiving guidance from the International and numerous meetings among the Past Presidents, the paper work was finished and submitted for approval to the International. The membership in this Foundation is limited to, and will consist of, all the active, privileged and senior members in good standing of Kiwanis Club of Wyandotte of the State of Michigan. The Kiwanis Club of Wyandotte - P. N. Burkard Foundation, Inc., was launched at our Installation Banquet on September 25, 2001. Past Presidents who served under the guidance of "Butch" made a tax-free contribution to set the Foundation in motion. This was a fitting way for our club to honor the memory of "Butch" for all of his contributions to our club and it's membership. Everyone is invited to make a contribution to the Foundation to honor his memory. The purposes for which the corporation is organized are: to assist needy persons, particularly young people; to assist worthy youth in attaining vocational excellence and; to aid handicapped persons in regaining happy, useful lives through the expanding of funds directly for such purposes or by the furnishing of funds to other organizations organized for charitable, scientific research, or educational purposes, or the prevention of cruelty to children, all within the purview of Section 501(3) of the Internal Revenue Code and regulations hereunder. If you would like to make a contribution to the Foundation, which is tax free, please make your check out to the Kiwanis Club of Wyandotte - P. N. Burkard Foundation, Inc. and send it to Kenneth Brooks at the following address: Hungerford & Co., 13305 Reeck Road, Southgate, MI 48195. Thank you for whatever interest you might have in this project, and the contribution you might want to make to honor "Butch". Kiwanis #1000 website calendar The calendar does not portray all of the activities of our club. It is meant only to show you some of the events that we are involved in. Projects are often scheduled on an as needed basis or on an immediate request of someone in need or at a request from a friend or relative of theirs. Kiwanis members like to get involved with hands on projects as well as monetary ones. Sometimes dates may change, for various reasons, or the location of the event may change. If you are interested in attending one of our events, please contact a Member of Kiwanis or e-mail the webmaster, Tom Jankowski, at tomnsue@wwnet.net.
