Frequently Asked Questions
Introducing yourself to another scout or scouter often brings
questions from a person who never before has heard of venturing,
or only heard a few things about it. For those who are just
finding out about the venturing program, here are some questions
you may have, and their answers.
- Is venturing the same thing as the Boy Scouts?
- Not exactly. Venturing is a division of the Boy Scouts of
America, so we share many concepts and regulations, but we are a
little different, too. We share the same districts, and councils,
and have the same council and district leaders. Our main
differance is in what we do, how we do it, and who participates,
more than who leads us or who makes the rules.
Do I have to join a scout troop to be a venturer?
- No, but this is nothing that says you can't be a member of
both, either. Many venturers are also scouts, but some never have
set foot in a troop meeting. For many, especially the female
members, this is their first exposure to the scouting
program.
Can girls join the venturing program?
- Different crews can set their own rules as to whether or not
to accept female members, but the vast majority do. Our crew, for
example is about 50% female.
I don't know anything about the outdoors, especially high
adventure activities, but it looks fun. Can I join?
- One of the things we do very often is learn to do the things
we do. No one is expected to walk into a crew a white water
rafting expert, we learn that as a group. Of course, a little
knowledge of the outdooors helps, but is not at all nessesary. It
is not uncommon for a new member to have never been hiking or
camping before.
I am a boy scout working on obtaining the Eagle Rank. Can
I continue working on rank advancement in a crew?
- If you are currently a First Class Scout, and working on your
eagle rank, you can still obtain the Eagle Rank, even if you are
only a member of a crew, and not in a Scout Troop.
Will venturing draw scouts away from their
troops?
- Venturing is not a replacement for scout troops, it's an
addition, something more for them to do, not something else.
