The Bahá'í Faith

Principles

Baha'u'llah taught the following princples in order to help us achieve world unity.

  • Elimination of Prejudice:
    • Prejudice of all kinds, racial, religious, national and political can be very destructive. One of the main causes of war is prejudice. Baha'u'llah said: "O well-beloved ones! The tabernacle of unity hath been raised; regard ye not one another as strangers. Ye are the fruits of one tree, and the leaves of one branch."
  • Equality of Men and Women:
    • There must be equal rights and opportunities for men and women. Humanity is like a bird with two wings, man and woman. A bird needs the power of both wings to fly. Likewise, humanity needs the contributions of both men and women to achieve unity and peace. Baha'u'llah said: "Women and Men have been and will always be equal in the sight of God."
  • Universal Compulsory Education:
    • Ignorance and lack of knowledge are barriers to understanding and cooperation among people. Baha'u'llah said: "Regard man as a mine rich in gems of inestimable value. Education can, alone, cause it to reveal its treasures, and enable mankind to benefit therefrom." & "In Truth, knowledge is a veritable treasure for man, and a source of glory."
  • Essential Harmony of Science and Religion:
    • Baha'u'lllah taught that religion and science are inter-twined with each other and cannot be separated because Truth is One. Religion without science is mere tradition, and science without religion is very destructive to the foundations of human society. Science and religion are both necessary for an ever-advancing civilization.
  • Universal Auxiliary Language:
    • The adoption of a universal language in addition to the native toungues, will facilitate better communication and understanding among the peoples of the world. Baha'u'llah said: "The day is approaching when all the peoples of the world will have adopted one universal language and one common script. When this is achieved, to whatsoever city a man may journey, it shall be as if he were entering his own home."
  • Spiritual Solutions to Economic Problems:
    • Baha'u'llah taught that the economic solution is divine in nature because religion alone can bring in man's nature such a fundamental change as to enable him to adjust the economic relationships of society. Only in this way, man can control the economic forces that threaten to disrupt the foundations of his existence and assert his mastery over the forces of nature.
  • Elimination of Extremes of Wealth and Poverty:
    • Some people have wealth beyond their needs, while others are in dire wont of their needs. Baha'u'llah taught that human beings are different in ability and should, therefore, be different in their social and economic standing. However, extremes of wealth and poverty should be totally abolished. Baha'u'llah revealed a specific law to help eliminate this extreme.
  • Universal Peace Upheld by a World Federation:
    • Baha'u'llah encouraged the establishment of an international federation with elected representatives from every nation. All disputes should be brought before this court, its mission being, to prevent war. This federation must resolve the conflicts through the process of consultation. All nations must follow its decision.
